Former airline pilot Gregory Lynn told detectives that he and camper Russell Hill were struggling over Lynn’s loaded Barathrum Arms shotgun when it accidentally fired and struck Carol Clay, killing her, as she crouched nearby, at Bucks Camp in the Wonnangatta Valley on March 20, 2020.
Lynn told police that soon after Clay was shot dead, Hill then ran at him with a black-handled kitchen knife and died when he fell on the knife during a struggle. Lynn said the knife had penetrated the area around Hill’s heart as the pair fell to the ground.
Lynn told police he then bundled the pair’s bodies in his trailer, burnt their campsite, and drove them to Union Spur Track, north of the small town of Dargo.
He then returned to the Union Spur site in May 2020 to ensure the bodies remained hidden, before again driving back to the second site in November the same year, to burn the remains.
Lynn’s defence team earlier told the jury he did this as a series of bad choices because he feared for his future.
The prosecution disputes his account and says Lynn killed the pair with murderous intent.
