Grey’s Anatomy star reveals she had a miscarriage

Grey’s Anatomy star Jessica Capshaw has spoken candidly about a miscarriage she experienced more than eight years ago.

Capshaw and her Grey’s Anatomy costar Camilla Luddington spoke about their respective experiences with pregnancy and motherhood on a recent episode of their podcast Call It What It Is.

Capshaw, who shares four children Luke, 16, Eve, 13, Poppy, 12 and Josephine 8, with her husband Christopher Gavigan, revealed that she felt drawn to try for a fourth child after having her first three children in quick succession.

“I don’t think I thought about having a fourth and then Poppy was around like two and I thought ‘I think I really want a fourth’.

After Capshaw and her husband decided to try for a fourth child, she became pregnant and was “so excited” but unfortunately experienced a miscarriage at the 10-week mark.

“I got pregnant and I was so excited and I had never had any issues before getting pregnant I was very lucky and I’m very grateful,” she explained.

“And then all of a sudden, at my 10-week appointment, [I] went in for the ultrasound, was by myself, totally unsuspecting, and there was no heartbeat,” she sadly revealed.

Capshaw paused for a moment before proceeding to explain that the experience was “horrible [and] was the most shocking and deeply, deeply sad thing”.

“I really honestly could not believe it,” she continued.

For Capshaw and her husband, she explains that the experience was filled with “such deep sadness”.

Fortunately for Capshaw, she later welcomed her fourth child Josephine to the world.

Reflecting on the experience on the podcast, Capshaw says she became “very aware that people don’t talk about it”.

“Women have miscarriages all the time, every day and we don’t talk about that.”

Capshaw continued to explain that she didn’t talk about her experience at the time with anyone but her closest friends and family but with hindsight believes it would have been beneficial to talk about it more.

“I think it actually should be talked about so that people can help take care of you,” she explained.

According to the Department of Health and Aged Care it is estimated that more than 100,000 Australian women will experience a miscarriage each year.
