Harbor Beach opens repainted basketball, pickleball courts

Must read

The city of Harbor Beach has opened its newly repainted basketball and pickleball courts for the season after working with the Huron County Community Foundation and the Beach Assault 3-on-3 basketball tournament.

Harbor Beach City Manager Ron Wruble said that through working with the two groups, they were able to fully resurface and paint new lines for the courts.

“The hoops and nets were installed last year,” Wruble said. “It’s open to the public now and we will have an official ribbon cutting closer to the maritime festival. This was a collaborative effort between the Huron County Community Foundation, The Beach Assault, the city of Harbor Beach and the Parks and Rec crew.”

Wruble said that the initial hoops and nets were installed for the first phase of this project.

The courts sit on top of the city’s water retention basin, as the top is one large cement slab. Executive Director of the HCCF Mackenzie Price said the city applied for the grant last fall.

“(The) HCCF, through our Community Impact Fund and Health and Wellness Fund, provided $1,500 to support the project,” Price said. “Supporting vibrant and dynamic communities is a strategic priority of HCCF. Enhancing use of our public spaces with additional resources and places for the community to gather creates vibrancy.”

Price said that the cost of this project was around $5,000, not including the labor donated by the city and the nets that were contributed by proceeds from the Biyakathon.

“I think this is going to be very good for the community,” Wruble said. “Even with it only being open for a few days, there have already been people out there using the courts.”

The courts are located Adjacent to Lincoln Memorial Park and are open to the public on a first come first serve basis. Registration for this year’s Beach Assault basketball tournament is currently open on the Maritime Festival website at themaritimefestival.com/maritime-events-page.
