Just days away from the expected launch of the facelifted Mk8.5 2025 Volkswagen Golf R, news has surfaced that the German brand is plotting an even faster hard-core Clubsport version to rival the likes of the Toyota GR Corolla Morizo Edition.
Said to be in the early stages of development, and yet to be given the green light for production, the Volkswagen Golf R Clubsport could become the quickest VW Golf ever.
Confirming the plans, global Volkswagen spokesperson Martin Hube told US car enthusiast outlet ‘Road and Track’: “There’s another interesting car we are working on at the moment. They are thinking about, and working on, a Clubsport version of the Golf R.”
Unlike the VW Golf GTI Clubsport, the Golf R version wouldn’t be all about lap times, mostly because of the extra weight of the all-wheel drive hardware, so engineers will be focusing on enhancing its on-road performance.
That said, the flagship Clubsport model should still be adept on any given circuit, having undergone a dramatic weight-loss program and likely featuring a far firmer suspension set-up than standard.
The final piece of the puzzle will be a healthy boost in power from its 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine, which should we well beyond the current 235kW.
No timeline has been given for the arrival of the new VW Golf R Clubsport, but it could be on sale in less than two years.
