Has Ludvig Aberg won a golf major? Career timeline, wins and record for 24-year-old on PGA Tour | Sporting News

Must read

The U.S. Open has seen some fresh faces win in recent years, including Matt Fitzpatrick in 2022 and Wyndham Clark a year ago. Is Ludvig Aberg set to join the fray?

The 24-year-old Aberg followed up an impressive showing at the Masters by starting red-hot at Pinehurst this week, surging to the top of the leaderboard entering Saturday. The former Texas Tech standout will have to fend off some more experienced golfers to win the tournament, but he hasn’t often seemed intimidated early in his career.

Making Aberg’s surge even more astounding is how difficult Pinehurst No. 2 has been through two days. The course is designed to challenge even the world’s best golfers, and it’s done exactly. Aberg, however, has remained steady.

Here’s a look at Aberg’s history in major championships and his overall record on the PGA Tour.

Has Ludvig Aberg won a major?

Aberg hasn’t won a major in his brief professional career. In fact, he entered the U.S. Open with only two appearances in a major.

Aberg’s major debut came at the Masters in April, and he followed it up by participating in the PGA Championship in May.

With only two majors under his belt, one would think Aberg hasn’t even come close to a win yet. That’s not accurate. He was a serious contender in his first career major, hovering right near the top of the leaderboard at the Masters before finishing second behind Scottie Scheffler.

While Aberg didn’t find the same success at Valhalla Golf Club during the PGA Championship, Pinehurst was supposed to represent a monumentally tougher challenge for inexperienced golfers. By and large, it has — just not for Aberg, who continues to play like someone who has been in these high-pressure moments before.

Aberg’s history in majors is a brief one. It could also be a historic one, if the 24-year-old can finish off a win at the U.S. Open. No golfer has won his U.S. Open debut since 1913, so Aberg has a chance to do something not seen in several generations if he can hang on at Pinehurst No. 2.

It became clear two months ago that this kind of result was at least possible for Aberg, as he finished a comfortable second at the Masters at 7-under par. While he didn’t end up threatening Scheffler, who pulled away late and won by four strokes, no player who finished third or lower was even within two strokes of Aberg despite the tournament being his first career major.

Aberg has a chance to become the youngest U.S. Open winner since Jordan Spieth in 2015, and he would also be the third consecutive first-time major champion to win the U.S. Open.

Ludvig Aberg PGA Tour wins

Aberg only turned professional in 2023, after winning all three national player of the year awards in his senior season at Texas Tech, but he does have a PGA Tour win under his belt.

The Swedish-born golfer won the RSM Classic in November, finishing 29-under par to win by four strokes. He also reached the playoff at the Sanderson Farms Championship but didn’t prevail out of a five-player field. Aberg finished eighth at The Players Championship earlier in 2024.

The RSM Classic win was a massive first step for Aberg, who first came to the U.S. for college before emerging as one of the best collegiate golfers in the nation. A win at the U.S. Open would be career-changing for Aberg, solidifying his place among the world’s best golfers and completing a rapid rise to greatness.
