Detective Inspector Joe Zitny said five police officers from the Burpengary station had attended the home.

“As a result of them attending that address, an altercation took place between the male occupant and police,” Zitny said, adding there were other people, including two adults and a baby, at the property.

The other adults and the baby were not physically injured.

“This resulted in a police firearm being presented and discharged, and as a result, a 46-year-old male has sustained an injury,” he said.

Zitny said the uniformed police were attached to the tactical crime squad, but could not comment further about the officer who fired his gun.

“What I can say is that he’s a member of the tactical crime squad and with that position comes a level of experience,” he said.

When asked whether it was one shot by one officer, or how fast it unfolded, Zitny said those aspects were still under investigation.

“I’m not in a position to say specifically what has happened, and that’s going to be subject to further investigation by the authorities,” he said.

The Ethical Standards Command is investigating the incident.

Zitny said police were in the process of taking statements from witnesses.

“Ultimately, their information will form part of our investigation and give us a picture of what actually took place,” he said.

The crime scene was expected to remain in place overnight and into Thursday while police continued their investigation.
