High school golf wraps up with city championship at Saskatoon GCC

Saskatoon high school teachers have provided their insights into their students participating in golf in team-by-team previews.

The Saskatoon high school golf season comes to an end with city championships this week at Saskatoon Golf and Country Club.

As usual, the provincials won’t be played until the following school year, with tee-off set for Sept. 27 and 28 at Northern Meadows Golf Club in Goodsoil.

The StarPhoenix presents our golf team-by-team previews and thanks the coaches for their insights in providing information.

Aden Bowman Bears

Coach: Sharon Harvey

Athletes to watch

  • Jack Maharaj Grade 10. Spent his off season in Vegas and is ready to return to the course and fight for that championship.
  • Aricin Franklin Grade 9. Coming off a sensational undefeated year in the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour (MJT) and is looking to continue performing well and helping to lead Bowman to a city championship
  • Brady Guenther Grade 11. Had an excellent showing at the season-opener and hopes to carry that momentum into this high school championship.

Previous Results

Second place, senior boys; second place, junior boys; second place, girls.

Expectations for this season

“Spending the season getting those second-place finishes from last year into 1sts this season. We are optimistic that we will be bringing the city championship trophies back to Bowman!”

Bishop Mahoney Saints

Coach: Brandon Holmes

Athletes to watch

  • Tyson Wawryk — Senior Boys, Grade 12. Looking to again be competitive in his 3rd city championship tournament.
  • Pierce Murphy & Brady Wilkinson Junior Boys, Grade 10. Both hit it long and straight and are the backbone of the BJM junior squad.
  • Alyssa Elliott — Girls, Grade 11. Hoping to improve on last year’s 3rd place overall finish at the city championship.

“We have a group of Grade 11 boys (Ben Staines, Ryder Mckinnon, Jon Saretsky, and Connor Millsap) moving into the senior category that are all working hard and showing a lot of improvements. Violet Puff, Grade 10, has also been playing some good golf and will compete in the girls competition.”

“Boys team title for both senior and junior.”

Expectations for this season

“We have a younger team this year, but hope to see a lot of good individual results as well as being competitive in the all three team competitions.”

L’Ecole Canadienne Francais Patriotes

“They are all new golfers.”

“To be able to hit the handicap limit.”

  • Grace Odnokon — Girls, Grade 9 As a competitive golfer, hockey player and swimmer, this is her debut competing in high school golf.
  • Grayson Malinoski — Senior Boys, Grade 11. Competed in golf when he was younger and is currently a goaltender for the Saskatoon Blazers.

Expectations for this season

“In a remarkable debut season, our small school proudly boasts a team of 18 dedicated golfers. With a talented lineup eagerly preparing for the upcoming city championship, accompanied by numerous aspiring players honing their skills for the Silverwood Tournament, our school’s golf team is set for success on and off the course.”

Evan Hardy Souls

Coach: Matt Roberts

Athletes to watch

  • Ino Li — Girls, Grade 11. Finished second at city championships last year and placed sixth at provincials.
  • Ethan Lieslar — Boys, Grade 11. Hits controlled off the tee with increasing accuracy as he approaches the green. He should be in the mix at city championships this year.

Marion Graham Falcons

Coach: Kris Street

Athletes to watch

  • Ryan Mosher — Senior, Grade 11. He has been working hard in the offseason and early spring to shave off a few strokes from his game. Has increased his drive distances and tightened up his short game. His ability to play under pressure makes him a threat on the course.

Previous Results

“Finished 4th overall in the senior championship and part of the winning team in provincials.”

Expectations for this season

“Look for Ryan to finish high in the standings for this season and contend for the provincial team again.”

St. Joseph Guardians

Coach: Josh Lipka

Athletes to watch

“We have a very large and growing program at St. Joes this year. We have lots of young guns who are passionate about golf and love the game!”

“To enjoy the process and continue to develop skills.”

Tommy Douglas Tigers

Coach: Ms. Howells

  • Kristian Peters — Senior, Grade 11. Returns for his third season and will be a significant leader for the program. He has a lot of pride and passion and a disciplined work ethic on the range. He continues to shave strokes off his score each season and will look to make more improvements this year heading to the city championship.
  • Brock Clark — Senior, Grade 11. Has a lot of natural talent and great potential to put up a great score. He has a love for the game and a smooth stroke that has him hitting fairways and greens. More attention to his short game will help him to make great strides in his second season in the program.
  • Evan Ottenbreit — Senior, Grade 11. Returns for his third season. He is a multiple sport athlete, however, and his baseball proficiency can sometimes compromise his time on the range.

Expectations for this season

“Transitioning to seniors will be a big step for this group as they meet some more experienced club golfers. They have the passion and the desire to improve which will help them in the journey to success.”

Walter Murray Marauders

Coach: Jason Schneider

Expectations for this season

“Our golf team, comprising both beginners and seasoned players, gathered at the golf dome and Wildwood Golf Course for our practices this year. Though our season was brief, it was filled with enthusiasm and learning. As we look ahead, we’re excited to continue growing together and strengthening our skills for the seasons to come.”
