Search teams looking for a walker missing since Wednesday in the remote Tasmanian wilderness say the man appears to have fallen to his death.
Earlier on Saturday, Tasmania Police said the 28-year-old man from Hobart was last seen at 7:30am on Wednesday, starting the final ascent of Frenchmans Cap.
The man, whose name has not been released, told other walkers that he intended to walk to the summit and return to Lake Vera that day.
He did not return to his camping site and the walkers reported their concerns to police shortly after.
On Saturday afternoon, police said a body believed to be that of the missing man had been found.
“This afternoon, searchers from Ambulance Tasmania and the State Emergency Service Search and Rescue Team located the body of a deceased man off the summit track.
“It appears the 28-year-old Hobart man had fallen, and died as a result of his injuries.
“The man’s family has been notified, and our thoughts are with them at this difficult time. Police would like to thank all those involved in the search last night and again today.”
Police also thanked the walkers who alerted police about their concerns when the man did not return to camp as planned.
“Their concern for a fellow walker ensured searchers were able to quickly deploy to the scene.”
