St John of God Richmond Hospital unveiled the new development today, which transformed the 88-bed hospital into a 112-capacity facility, which includes a gym, group room and an indoor pool.
The facility will have a strong focus on first responders and veterans seeking mental health support.
St John of God Health Care chair Kerry Sanderson said the hospital will be a leading provider of mental health care.
“St John of God Health Care is proud to be continuing our longstanding legacy by providing a safe place to receive care for mental illness through holistic person-centred care,” Sanderson said.
“Through this redevelopment, St John of God Richmond Hospital has created a sanctuary that inspires confidence, trust and promotes hope and healing through excellent care.”
Patients will stay in private rooms with access to an en suite.
The hospital also features innovative treatments, like electro-convulsive therapy and transcranial magnetic stimulation services in the neurostimulation suite.
The dining area has also been upgraded, with a “light and airy” space for visitors and patients.
St John of God Health Care Group CEO Bryan Pyne said that ongoing consultation with clients was at the heart of the redevelopment.
“We engaged with our clients and their families to ensure our services were designed to meet their mental health care needs, as well as guiding St John of God Health Care’s mental health strategy,” Pyne said.
“The facilities we are showcasing today have been developed to help people overcome the disconnection and isolation that comes with mental illness and assist with reconnecting to family and friends.”
A chapel and pharmacy will also be added, and are expected to be completed by the end of the year.
