How Australian tourist suffered horrific injuries while on Indonesian holiday

Indonesian Police have revealed how an Australian woman suffered severe and life-changing facial injuries after she was found semi-conscious on the road of an island earlier this week.

Sky News host Paul Murray has warned Australians that Bali is threatening significant fines and potential prison time for overseas tourists behaving badly on the Indonesian island.

“I tell you all that because Australians clearly love going to Bali,” Mr Murray said.

“I’m telling you now, calm down, make it like half a wild night rather than a full-on wild night for obvious reasons.”

Rebecca Ode from Newcastle in New South Wales, was found on the island of Nusa Lembongan on Monday night reportedly semi-conscious and on the side of a road with a brain haemorrhage, shattered eye socket, cheekbones and collarbones.

The 36-year-old was rushed to Ngoerah General Hospital in Denpasar where she underwent 14 hours of surgery to stop the bleeding in her brain and to save her eyes.

Nusa Penida Police Chief Ida Bagus Putra Sumerta confirmed Ms Ode was involved in a motorbike accident, with an investigation to be launched into what happened.

It is believed she had crashed into a parked motorbike.

Chief Sumerta added the road was in a good condition prior to the incident.

After the reconstructive surgery, Ms Ode woke up in hospital appearing to be confused.

“What happened to me?” she said, according to neurosurgeon specialist Professor Tjokorda Gde Bagus Mahadewa who worked on the Newcastle local.

A plastic surgeon, ophthalmologist and orthopedic specialist also worked on her.

Doctors first worked to “correct her head bones” and treat the “leak in her brain”.

“Then we did a correction on her face and nose because it’s all broken. An ophthalmologist was also involved to handle her right eye, while an orthopedic specialist performed surgery to her bones,” Professor Mahadewa told Daily Mail.

“The ophthalmologist has said that her eye may not be saved.

“She is also suffering amnesia. She can’t remember the accident at all.”

Ms Ode’s sister’s partner Jesse Wilton said the injuries will be life-changing.

“She has lost an eye, fractured two cheekbones and a jaw and has surgery as well on her collarbone. She’s got haemorrhaging in the brain and air pockets in the skull,” he said.

Her family back at home found out she was injured and in hospital after a friend of Ms Ode’s contacted them, revealing she had been in an accident.

It is understood Ms Ode had attended a function prior to being found.

The 36-year-old was on an extended holiday in the popular Asian country since January, following the death of her father which she had struggled to overcome.

Ms Ode’s mother Shari and sister Jordyn flew to Bali to be by her bedside this week.

Loved ones have turned their focus to raising funds to fly her back home for care in Australia, however, the costs to medevac the 36-year-old is over six figures.

Mr Wilton estimated medical bills could total to more than $200,000.

A GoFundMe has been created with more than $172,000 raised so far.
