BEIRUT, July 10 (Xinhua) — Technology experts on Tuesday emphasized the need to enhance Lebanon’s Information and Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructure to support digital transformation in the country, noting that China’s tech giant Huawei can help in this regard.

On the sidelines of the Huawei Middle East Commercial Roadshow held in Beirut, Alaa Elshimy, managing director and senior vice president of Enterprise Business Group, Huawei Middle East, said that Huawei has been working to build vertical solutions for different industries.

“For example, we built more than 700 smart cities globally, over 5,000 smart hospitals, and 6,000 smart education institutes. We have a lot of experience and successful cases in global digital transformation, and we can bring our technology, products, and solutions and these vertical solutions to deliver them to Lebanon in the future,” he told Xinhua.

Aline Kanaan, sales administration manager at Computer Information Systems, told Xinhua that Lebanon’s ICT infrastructure requires strengthening through the adoption of new technologies and Huawei offers a great opportunity for this purpose.

For his part, Amine Soueidy, general manager at BMB, a partner of Huawei, told Xinhua that Huawei could play a significant role in providing new technologies for Lebanon in different sectors as the company understands how to cope and cooperate with a country with a crisis like Lebanon.

“Huawei has a culture that allows it to serve clients with difficulties in payments and recovery,” he said.

Derek Hao, president of the Enterprise Business Group for the Middle East and Central Asia, said Huawei is committed to investing in and developing cutting-edge ICT infrastructure in Lebanon, highlighting four fields where Huawei could be involved: government, education, financial services, and healthcare.

Huawei can help Lebanon digitize its public services, enhancing the quality of life for all citizens, Hao added.

According to the Investment Development Authority of Lebanon (IDAL), the ICT sector contributed 1.1 billion U.S. dollars to the country’s GDP in 2018. IDAL forecasted that the sector’s total contribution to GDP would reach 7 billion dollars by 2025.
