‘I need to get better’: Hynes breaks silence after Origin axing and classy Moses message

Must read

Sharks superstar Nicho Hynes has broken his silence following his second Origin axing, explaining he believes he need to “get better”.

Hynes was replaced by Mitchell Moses in the No.7 ahead of Game II, with Michael Maguire called the 2022 Dally M Medallist to inform him of the decision on Sunday.

It’s the second time Hynes has now been dropped after the series opener, having been removed from the bench following a 12-minute stint off the bench in 2023.

Speaking to The Daily Telegraph, Hynes admitted he is desperate for another chance in the Origin arena, but also sent a classy message to the man who replaced him.

As soon as he found out he hadn’t won the No.7 jersey, Hynes made contact with Moses to congratulate him.

“I just wanted to wish Mitch all the best. I’m fully backing Mitch. I hope he does an awesome job and can help lead NSW to victory,’’ Hynes said.

“I’d be lying if I didn’t say I’d love another crack at Queensland.

“I’d love to be there, as would every other available NSW halfback. That’s the environment that Origin is, it’s addictive and you just want to keep being a part of it.

“Madge (Maguire) gave me the call and he gave me the reason why he was going with Mitch and I have accepted that. I’m fine. I’m not offering up any excuses. I just need to get better.”

Hynes also revealed Maguire had invited him to the MCG to attend Game II, however that depends on the Sharks’ training schedule ahead of Round 17.

As for his attitude since being dropped? Hynes has remained positive as ever and said he’s “about the happiest I’ve ever been with my life”.

Meanwhile, he also sent a message of support to the Blues ahead of a series-defining Game II clash.

“Madge did a great job in putting the camps together. He has assembled a great team around him, with Frank Ponissi involved,’’ Hynes said.

“I have no hard feelings, I just want the boys to go out and beat Queensland. I believe we can do it.”
