Indianapolis Colts could feature electric rookie as starter on NFL kickoffs | Sporting News

Must read

A continuous topic of discussion this offseason around the NFL is the changes being made to the kickoff part of the game.

The NFL put in motion this offseason to adopt a hybrid kickoff setup that was inspired by the XFL. The focus is to reduce injuries on arguably the most dangerous play in an NFL game, but it also may afford the opportunity for bigger returns.

The Indianapolis Colts lacked a major presence when it came to making a difference on kickoffs in 2023, partly due to the injuries of cornerback Dallis Flowers and wide receiver Ashton Dulin.

In suggesting which player each NFL team should use as their return man on kickoffs, Anthony DiBona of Pro Football Network landed on Colts rookie wide receiver Anthony Gould.

“While Josh Downs could be in the mix here, rookie WR Anthony Gould offers a ton of upside as a returner. Gould returned just one kickoff during his college career, but he was an elite punt returner, averaging 16.3 yards per return with two touchdowns. His game-breaking speed could prove to be a lethal weapon for the Colts,” DiBona wrote.

Gould is the most likely option to be one of the team’s kick returners to open the season so this selection is spot on.

A fifth-round pick by the Colts, Gould brings game-breaking speed to the mix. It’s unlikely he will climb the depth chart in the wide receiver room with Josh Downs returning as the main slot option. But Gould can make a massive impact on kick returns given his speed and abilities after the catch.

We should get a good glimpse of Gould in that role during training camp and the preseason so that will be one of the storylines to watch.
