Indianapolis Colts free-agent signing among NFL’s worst offseason moves | Sporting News

Must read

The Indianapolis Colts didn’t make many additions to the roster in free agency when it came to players outside the organization.

While re-signing their own was a massive priority during the offseason, they made additions in the form of quarterback Joe Flacco and defensive tackle Raekwon Davis as outside signings.

Flacco will work as the backup to second-year quarterback Anthony Richardson while Davis has a rotational role lined up on the interior defensive line.

Even so, the latter signing was dubbed the team’s worst offseason move by Vinnie Iyer of Sporting News.

Yes, defensive tackle can be a tough position to get right, as the position tends to be the middle reliever of the NFL hot stove. Davis doesn’t do much to move the needle as a starter coming over from the Dolphins.

Fortunately for the Colts, Davis isn’t expected to be a starter unless something happens to Grover Stewart. The latter signed a three-year deal with the Colts in free agency.

Davis signed a two-year deal worth $14 million with the Colts during the offseason. He provides a massive frame (6-foot-7 and 325 pounds) and extreme length (33 7/8-inch arms) at the defensive tackle position.

In 2023, Davis recorded 28 tackles (15 solo), two tackles for loss, six quarterback hits, and 0.5 sacks. According to Pro Football Focus, he logged 24 total pressures and 13 run stops.
