Jakarta (ANTARA) – Several officials from Indonesia’s Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs and other ministries explored cooperation in online gambling and online fraud eradication with the government of Cambodia this week.

Assistant Deputy for Coordination of Asia, Pacific, and Africa Cooperation at the coordinating ministry Nur Rokhmah Hidayah led the Indonesian delegation’s five-day visit to Cambodia from Tuesday (June 11, 2024) to Saturday (June 15).

The Indonesian delegates met with several key officials from the Cambodian Ministry of Labor and Vocational Training, the National Committee For Counter Trafficking (NCCT), the Ministry of Interior, and the National Police of Cambodia.

During the meeting with Cambodian officials, Hidayah noted that the two countries have so far collaborated well in handling several criminal cases of trafficking in persons (TIP), especially those involving Indonesian citizens in Cambodia.

“This cooperation needs to continue to be improved, especially in the aspect of providing protection to Indonesian citizens who work and live in Cambodia,” she said, according to an official statement released here on Saturday.

On the occasion, the Indonesian delegation also offered cooperation in capacity building to the National Police of Cambodia and NCCT.

The training is planned for late September 2024 and will include several aspects, such as TIP case identification, case detection, investigation, and procedures for protecting TIP victims.

Hidayah said the Cambodian government welcomed the offer.

According to the Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, there has been a sharp spike in cases of Indonesian citizens getting caught in Cambodian online gambling and fraud networks, namely from 15 cases in 2020 to 1,386 cases in 2023.

Of the 1,386 cases in 2023, 544 involved online gambling and 842 were related to online fraud.
