Injury news: Redman to miss, Reid set for surgery, Parish suffers setback

Mason Redman will miss Essendon’s King’s Birthday Eve clash against Carlton due to a minor hamstring strain.

The defender pulled up sore from the Bombers’ loss to Gold Coast on Sunday night, with scans on Monday confirming he’ll miss this week’s game from the low-grade strain.

At this stage, the club is hopeful Redman could return for the round 15 fixture against West Coast at home.

Meanwhile, Kyle Langford and Todd Goldstein will be a chance to take on Carlton – Langford was subbed out late in Sunday’s game after copping a corked hip, whereas Goldstein was rested to overcome a sore ankle out of the Richmond game the previous week.

The pair’s availability for the matchup with the Blues will depend on how they get through main training this week.

Zach Reid will be unavailable for the majority of the remainder of the 2024 season as he undergoes surgery on a torn pectoral muscle.

The 22-year-old suffered the injury making a tackle during the third quarter of Essendon’s VFL clash with Box Hill – scans on Monday confirmed the extent of the injury, surgery for which will occur in the coming days.

After piecing together strong form in the reserves over the past month, the contact injury is another stroke of bad luck for the promising defender.

Surgery for a torn pectoral muscle can carry a three-month recovery time, with the defender now unlikely to return before the end of the home-and-away campaign.

“’Reidy’ has done a mountain of work to get back to playing after an early season hamstring injury,” GM – AFL Daniel McPherson said.

“It’s devastating that he now faces another extended period on the sidelines after building a strong block of form in the VFL, which had him on the verge of an AFL recall.

“He is a great person and a highly valued member of our playing group, and we’re all here to support him through this next period of time. He’s still only 22 years old and has plenty of great footy ahead of him, we’re confident his luck will turn and he will be great long-term defender for the Essendon footy club.”

Darcy Parish has re-aggravated his niggling calf injury, now looking at a further stint on the sidelines.

Parish commenced his running program over the weekend and felt discomfort during his recovery. He was immediately sent for scans that revealed a strain in his calf and a revised rehab program has now been developed.

“It’s disappointing for Darcy, as he was just at the start of a conservative reintroduction to running when he felt some discomfort. It will add a couple of weeks to his original return-to-play timeline,” McPherson said.

Midfielder Will Setterfield made a successful return from a knee injury via the VFL last week, racking up 29 disposals and two goals in the loss to Box Hill.

Forward Nate Caddy will also be available for selection this week after overcoming the bout of illness that kept him out of action on Sunday.
