Princess Maria Carolina of Bourbon Two Sicilies, Duchess of Calabria and Duchess of Palermo may have a lot of titles, but she’s not in line to inherit any royal thrones.

That didn’t stop her from splashing out on an extravagant 21st birthday party in Sardinia, a large island off the coast of Italy, this week.

Carolina was showered with designer gifts from Hermes, Jo Malone and Bottega Veneta as she celebrated with family and friends at the Cervo Hotel at the Costa Smeralda Resort.

She posed with a massive four-tier birthday cake for photos which she later posted on Instagram, alongside other videos and snaps from the weekend.

One showed her literally surrounded by shopping bags as she unwrapped her gifts after the party.

Younger sister Princess Maria Chiara of Bourbon-Two Sicilies featured in many of the snaps, as did their proud parents.

Born on June 23, 2003, Carolina inherited her royal titles from her father Prince Carlo, who descends from the House of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, which ruled over Southern Italy and Sicily in the 18th and 19th centuries.

The family’s throne has been defunct for hundreds of years, but they still have ties to royalty around Europe.

“The Bourbon family is related to almost all the royal families or former rulers of Europe, it’s a kind of big club,” Chiara previously told Italian paper Corriere.

Their mother Duchess Camilla of Castro is just as impressive as their father, as her own father was an Italian industry Tycoon and her mother was an actress.

Camilla marked her eldest daughter’s milestone with a sweet Instagram post where she compared a recent mother-daughter photo to a snap she took with Carolina as a baby.

“Last week vs exactly 21 years ago,” she captioned the photos.

“How much time has flown. Happy Birthday Carolina. Watching you grow has been our greatest joy.”

It appears that the family first celebrated Carolina’s birthday back in June, when the princess posted a series of snaps surrounded by pink flowers and balloons on Instagram.

In one photo she posed with her parents while each of them held a cake, one bearing a ‘Happy Birthday’ cake topper and the other bearing a similar topper and the number ’21’.

She also recently attended the 2024 F1 Grand Prix Gala, where she rubbed shoulders with F1 stars like Charles Leclerc.
