Yahoo Sports NBA contributor Tom Haberstroh takes a look at his latest ‘Big Number’ – focused on the Celtics star’s historic award win — and whether it’s a sign of a potential new dynasty in the NBA.

Video transcript

I’m Tom Haberstroh.

And you’re watching the big number.

Today’s big number is 27 as in the age of Jalen Brown who just won the finals MVP for the Boston Celtics.

It’s the 25th time in NBA history that a player has won the award in their age 27 season or younger.

That is square in their prime, ready to win another one.

Right.

Well, how many of those young finals MVP won the title the following season?

I’ve got some bad news of the 24 previous finals.

Mvps who were 27 or younger.

Only five of them raised the Larry o’brien trophy again the next season underscoring how hard it will be for the Boston Celtics to climb the mountain top again.

Whenever a team this young wins a title, we wonder if we have a dynasty in the making.

We did it with Nicole Y pitch in the Denver Nuggets.

We did it with Giannis added a coupe and the Milwaukee Bucks, but neither of them returned to even the conference finals the next season.

So, yes, Jalen Brown, Jason Tatum and this deep Boston Celtics roster may seem destined to be back to this stage next year, but it’s not a safe bet.

Even with Brown’s impressively young age of 27 I’m Tom Avers throw and that’s the big number.
