Former Las Vegas Raiders and Baltimore Ravens tight end Darren Waller has reportedly been contemplating his decision for some time with the New York Giants – and could retire soon
New York Giants tight end Darren Waller is reportedly on the brink of deciding whether to retire, with an announcement expected by next week.
As the Giants gear up for their mandatory minicamp starting next week, all eyes are on the 31 year old Waller, who is tipped by many to call time on his career. Waller has been mulling over retirement since last season ended and has skipped the team’s voluntary workouts.
The Giants seem prepared for his departure, having drafted Penn State’s Theo Johnson as a potential replacement in the fourth round of the draft. Waller, who joined the Giants last March, has openly discussed the significance of mental health following his split from basketball star Kelsey Plum this summer, coinciding with his move from the Raiders.
In a heartfelt Instagram post, Waller shared his latest venture into music, inspired by his personal experiences: “Creating always provides a mirror for me to grow and heal. So I give you a song written to me, by me.”
In another post, he made a candid confession, “On February 3, I felt a strong conviction to do something different. I’d never written a song from the perspective of someone else until this. There’s something extremely valuable (and quite humbling lol) about putting yourself in the shoes of those you have been intimate with and taking an honest look at yourself. The only result possible is growth.”
The deeply emotional track was dropped last week, followed by the emotive music video release on Thursday, May 30. Evidently charting the course of a messy breakup, it shows Waller embroiled in heated discussions with a woman, seemingly portraying Plum.
As Waller attempts to reason through his heartfelt lyrics, the woman appears disinterested, shaking her head no. After Waller walks away down the road, she jumps into a yellow jeep and chases after him, leading to more confrontation as the lyrics shift and they keep arguing before she drives off.
In the concluding scenes of the video, the pair seem to reconcile in a beach-side hug, but a shocking twist occurs when Waller is betrayed, stabbed in the back by the woman wielding a pocketknife. He falls face-first onto the shoreline as a wave crashes over him while she watches on, grinning mercilessly.
Plum had opened about the divorce previously, saying: “I mean, I’m sure everyone knows it’s pretty public. But, for me, I’m super grateful. I think my faith has grown tremendously and, not just that, but I know who I am. You kind of get refined by fire.”
