It’s not looking finger-lickin’ good for the Colonel.

KFC Australia has been forced to remove a key menu item from hundreds of stores across two states.

If you’re in Victoria or South Australia, you won’t be able to order chicken nuggets for the foreseeable future.

Instead, customers who order a meal that would normally include the crispy snack will be offered popcorn chicken as a substitute.

The move is understood not to be related to the bird flu outbreak at certain poultry farms in Victoria, rather, the fast food giant has put it down to a “very small disruption” in its supply chain.

“There’s been a very small disruption within our supply chain which means some KFC restaurants in Victoria and South Australia won’t be serving nuggets and will be offering Popcorn Chicken as a replacement in our shared meals,” a KFC spokesperson told 9honey Kitchen in a statement.

“We can confirm this supply issue is not related to the bird flu outbreak. We’re working with our suppliers to get things back on track to restock affected areas ASAP.”

It comes as more than one million birds in Victoria are set to be killed to stop the spread of bird flu, with poultry farmers currently fighting Australia’s biggest outbreak of the disease.

Hundreds of thousands of farmed birds across seven farms in Victoria’s south-west have been found to have highly pathogenic strains of avian influenza.

Authorities have confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public as the strain of bird flu that can infect humans – H5N1 – has not been detected in this outbreak.
