KFC to become sixth chicken shop on the same Sydney street

KFC’s plan to open in Sydney’s bohemian inner west suburb Newtown is ruffling some proverbial feathers.

Remarkably, the fast food giant will be the sixth chicken outlet within 100 metres on the popular King Street strip.

The colonel will be marching into a defunct diner just three doors up from Adnan’s Gami Korean fried chicken shop.

“That’s a very scary sight for any small business operator,” Adnan said.

“Because they are so big the economies of scale is there, they can buy in big numbers and drop their prices … and then the little guy, they get him out and then their prices go up.”

“What KFC was probably thinking is there are a lot of people who are sustaining these brands, so they’re coming in where people are already looking for fried chicken or looking for fast chicken,” she said.

“They’re just making a market that’s essentially more competitive and trying to take away customers from these other five venues.”

Shops like KFC do want to look at areas where they can get people who are searching for that dirty bird at 2am.

Other popular chicken chains including El Jannah and Gami Chicken & Beer sit on popular King Street. (Nine)

Italian restaurant owner Fabio said he took chicken off his menu due to the competition.

“The chicken shop, they do better than my one – no chicken on my one’,” he said.
