King Charles and Queen Camilla’s third day at the Channel Island of Jersey has been interrupted by a security scare, with the Queen ushered to safety at nearby hotel.
There has been a security scare for King Charles and Queen Camilla.
This comes amid their first official visit to the Chanel Islands since the King took the throne.
The security threat turned out to be a false alarm, however, it showed a heightened level of sensitivity following the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump in America.
Royal aides were forced to usher The King, 75 and the Queen, 76, away from their third engagement of the day at the Jersey Expo event after a small issue of concern was raised.
Footage showed Camilla sampling local made ice cream from a van in Weighbridge Place when a female close protection officer appeared to whisper in her ear.
In a matter of minutes, the aid and another officer took her into the nearby Pomme D’or hotel before the Queen stopped to receive sunflowers from a crowd member on her way.
The alert soon transpired to be a false alarm and the royal couple were able to resume their programme of events after the brief pause, with Buckingham palace remaining tight lipped.
Jersey Dairy managing director Eamon Fenlon said he had served the Queen ice cream and turned to grab one when she was whisked away.
“I had just given the Queen an ice cream and I turned back to get one myself before we had a chat. But when I turned back round she had been whisked off,” he said.
Jersey Sea Salt founder Matt Taylor said he had been speaking with the King when a protection officer told him the monarch had to leave immediately.
“He stopped at the stall and said, ‘Ooh sea salt’ and I said ‘come and have a chat, Sir.’ Then his security appeared and grabbed me and said ‘he has to go, now.’. He didn’t seem panicked, but he was quite stern,” he said.
“They just ushered him out. It’s a shame as he’d stopped to chat to us of his own accord.”
Sky News UK Reporter Rhiannon Mills said it was a member of the royal visit team walking around the event first who raised the alarm.
“Certainly, it shows a heightened level of sensitivity after what happened in America,” she said .
The incident comes two days after the attempted assassination on former US President Donald Trump at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, about 6:15pm on Saturday, local time.
The King’s first return in the Channel Islands since 2012 comes as he makes a return to public duties amid treatment for an undisclosed type of cancer.
Charles, who is known as the as the Duke of Normandy in the region, will highlight the relationship between the Islands and the Crown which dates back centuries.
The trip will end a day before a planned State Opening of Parliament on Wednesday, which is also Camilla’s 77th birthday.
