LIV Golf star Graeme McDowell has called into question Novak Djokovic’s rather bizarre post-match interview following his Round of 16 victory over Holger Rune at Wimbledon.
Djokovic, 37, lambasted a minority of fans on Centre Court after his straight sets victory as “disrespectful”.
The World No.2 thought fans were booing him during the match, despite the large majority of fans shouting out ‘Ruuuuuuune’.
Djokovic said on court after the match:
“Well, to all the fans that have respect and that stayed here tonight, thank you very much from the bottom of my heart. I appreciate it, I appreciate it.
“And to all those people that have chosen to disrespect the player, in this case me, have a goooood night.”
When the BBC’s Rishi Persad told Djokovic that wasn’t the case and it was cries of ‘Ruuuuuuune’, the record 24-time grand slam champion replied:
“They were, they were, they were. I don’t accept it. No, no, no.”
After listening to Djokovic’s comments, tennis fan and European Ryder Cup hero McDowell took to X / Twitter.
G-Mac believes the Serbian is still the GOAT but did find his interview somewhat baffling to say the least.
‘Djokovic is the goat but not sure about this post match interview,’ tweeted McDowell.
‘Fans supporting their guy and certainly didn’t think they were trying to disrespect Novak.
‘Maybe I’m wrong but that’s how it seemed.’
McDowell failed to qualify for The Open during a qualifier last week.
He is back in competitive action at LIV Golf Andalucia this week.
The Northern Irishman has yet to win on LIV Golf but he does have three top-10 finishes in nine events so far this season.
McDowell is a member of Brooks Koepka’s Smash GC, which also comprises Jason Kokrak and Talor Gooch.
The former US Open champion spoke exclusively to GolfMagic earlier this season.
