Live: Government cancels at least 20 visas in immigration blitz

Must read

The federal government has cancelled the visas of about 20 convicted criminals born overseas.

Immigration Minister Andrew Giles has been reviewing the cases of about 30 foreign nations who had their visas re-instated by an independent tribunal despite committing serious crimes.

The tribunal made the decisions after weighing up the close ties each person had to Australia.

The government is now re-writing the ministerial direction, known as Direction 99, that led to those outcomes and says the new rule is almost complete.

It says it’ll make it crystal clear to officials that community safety should be its top consideration.
