Jason Ryles might have grown “impatient” at the Melbourne Storm waiting for Craig Bellamy’s retirement.
According to Phil Gould, that led to him taking the job as head coach of the Eels on a four-year deal from next season.
“Craig Bellamy has shown no signs of giving it away at the moment,” Gould explained on Wide World of Sports’ Six Tackles with Gus.
“Whether or not Jason’s just got impatient or he’s decided that now’s the time, ‘I can’t wait another year’, or ‘this is an opportunity too good to refuse’.”
Gould suggested there will be little Ryles needs to do to improve the performance of the current playing group when he arrives there next season.
“(Parramatta) have all the elements of a successful team right at the moment. Their position on the ladder defies all belief and all common sense,” he said.
“Two years ago, they played in the grand final. I don’t understand why it’s got to where it is right at the moment.
“There (is) some low-hanging fruit there to get things improved very, very quickly, and show improvement in the club, which will look good on his resume when he gets there.
“I don’t think it’ll be a very difficult job to improve the performances of this group of players right now.
“But what the next group of players, and what their future looks like, that’s the job of the club as a whole, not so much the job of the head coach.”
