Major highway closed after man allegedly stabs woman to death, attempts carjacking

A man allegedly stabbed a woman to death before crashing into a truck and trying to carjack another woman on a major Queensland highway.

The woman suffered stab wounds at an address in Mighell near Innisfail in northern Queensland on Friday afternoon and died at the scene.

A man believed to have been known to the woman allegedly left in a car before police arrived and then collided with a truck on the Bruce Highway at Sandy Pocket.

The truck driver was not injured but the suspect fled on foot.

The highway was closed as police searched for the man, who allegedly attempted to steal a car from another woman nearby.

She was also injured and police eventually arrested the 51-year-old man near the highway.

Police said there was no further threat to public safety and their investigation remained ongoing.
