Man arrested at Sydney Airport after grandfather killed in alleged hit-and-run

A man has been arrested at Sydney Airport and charged over an alleged fatal hit-and-run in Sydney’s west late last month.

The incident occurred just before 11.45pm on Sunday June 30, at Abell Rd at Melonba.

Pedestrian Damodar Shrestha, 79, was allegedly struck from behind by a car that failed to stop.

He could not be saved by paramedics.

Shrestha’s granddaughter Surabhi Shrestha said the family learned of his death hours later when they went searching for him.

Surabhi and her grandmother were driving around to try to find him when she saw a road taped off.

“My heart just sunk a little,” she told 7NEWS.

A crime scene was established and an investigation launched.

Following an investigation, a 32-year-old man was arrested about 11.30am on Wednesday, July 10, at Sydney International Airport.

The man was taken to Mascot police station where he was charged with four offences: Fail to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing death, dangerous driving occasioning death – drive manner dangerous, negligent driving occasioning death and not give particulars to police.

The man was refused bail to appear at Downing Centre Local Court later on Thursday.
