A 19-year-old man has been arrested by NSW Police with a knife outside NSW state Labor MP Tim Crakanthorp’s office.
Sky News can reveal the teenager was reading a 200-page manifesto he had written where he vowed to commit a mass-killing.
The manifesto was sent to a number of high-profile figures in the media and politics today, who immediately notified police.
Counter-terrorism police are understood to be investigating the incident.
It’s understood the 19-year-old is now in custody.
NSW Police confirmed a 19-year-old was arrested by Newcastle Police at 12.30 on Wednesday.
They received a “concern for welfare report” about the teenager.
In a statement police said he was allegedly found possessing knives and tactical equipment.
“Following inquiries officers attached to Newcastle Police District attended a premises on Workshop Way where they arrested the man,” the statement said.
“Following a subsequent search police located a number of items which have now been seized.”
Police said they were only aware of the existence of the manifesto after the man’s arrest.
“The male is currently assisting police and there is no ongoing threat to the community relating to this investigation,” a spokesman said.
It is understood the man entered Mr Crakanthorp’s office briefly, before returning outside to film himself.
Mr Crakanthorp told Sky News Australia nobody from his team had been harmed during the incident.
“I understand that there was an incident in Newcastle today. I have spoken with police and they are managing the situation and have assured me that nobody was harmed,” he said.
“I have been advised that the individual briefly walked in and out of my office, he left before making any contact with my staff.”
