A man accused of killing his ex-wife by running her car off the road in a high-speed crash in the NSW Central West has died in custody.

Troy Andrew Armstrong, 36, was charged with murder after allegedly driving his ute at 140km/h into Kristy Armstrong’s sedan in Molong, about 35 kilometres north-west of Orange, on June 9, 2023.

The 36-year-old woman died at the scene on Speedy Street. Her former husband was also charged with two counts of attempted murder relating to two passengers who were left with minor injuries, and three counts of breaching apprehended violence orders.

He was cut from the wreckage and flown to Sydney’s Royal North Shore Hospital in a critical condition with serious brain and spinal injuries, with a court previously hearing he could no longer walk.

Armstrong had been treated in Long Bay Hospital. He had been refused bail in the year since the crash and died in custody earlier this week.

“A 36-year-old male inmate was found unresponsive in his cell at the Metropolitan Remand and Reception Centre in Silverwater, Sydney on Tuesday, 4 June 2024,” a Corrective Services NSW spokeswoman said in a statement.
