Marc Cucurella says he has been probing Spanish teammate Nico Williams about moving to Chelsea this summer.
The Athletic Bilbao winger is being tipped to join Barcelona in the coming weeks, despite reported interest from the Blues and Arsenal. But before then, he will attempt to guide Spain to the Euro 2024 crown in Sunday’s finale versus England.
Both he and Cucurella have played all but one of his country’s matches en route to Berlin, with Williams standing out as one of the stars of the tournament alongside potential future Barcelona teammate Lamine Yamal.
Nou Camp president Joan Laporta insists his club have the finances to buy Williams this summer despite the club’s mass debts, with La Liga chief Javier Tebas confirming this. Williams is thought to have a release clause of around £47m in his contract.
This would be affordable to Chelsea but rumours suggest the 22-year-old only has eyes for Barcelona. Despite this, Cucurella says he has been trying to persuade Williams to move to Stamford Bridge.
“I tell him every day he should come to Chelsea, he would help us a lot!” He told The Athletic. “He is more than welcome and he knows that [laughs]. But he is so young, he has to decide by himself and with his people, so it’s not time to put too many things in his head.”

Cucurella and Williams have occupied the left flank for Spain throughout Euro 2024. Cucurella says he and his Spanish teammates have been able to quickly strike up a good relationship with the attacker over the past month, albeit it seems this is unlikely to be replicated at Chelsea.
The left-back added: “Without doing too much in the camp, we have created a very good relationship with Nico and in the end, these sorts of players need to feel comfortable and important.
“What I tell Nico all the time is that he has to do his thing, create whatever goes through his mind, and I’ll be covering his back or doing anything he needs me to.”
