Microsoft Brings Flex Keyboard to Previous Surface Pro Models

Must read

Microsoft launched its Surface Pro Flex Keyboard alongside the new Snapdragon X-based Surface Pro 11th Edition this past week. But thanks to a set of firmware updates, it’s now available to previous-generation Surface Pro models too.

“Enables a seamless experience of using the new Pro Flex Keyboard with Slim Pen on the latest Surface Pro devices,” the June 2024 firmware update release notes for Surface Pro 10 for Business, Surface Pro 9, and Surface Pro 8 read. (The Surface Pro 9 update also includes an important security fix.) Notably absent from this list is the Surface Pro X, but it’s not clear if this PC will be updated to support this new keyboard.

The Surface Pro Flex Keyboard costs $349—or $450 with a bundled Slim Pen—and while it looks and works much like the other less expensive Surface Pro keyboards, it provides one significant and useful additional feature: It can also be used when detached from the PC, thanks to its built-in Bluetooth connectivity, and at a distance of up to 16 feet in a typical office environment.

Like the Surface Pro Keyboard with Slim Pen, this keyboard provides a built-in Slim Pen storage tray that charges the pen. And the Surface Pro Flex Keyboard charges when you connect it to the Surface Pro, while lasting over 40 hours on a charge.
