The Ministry for the Environment is proposing to slash more than 300 jobs as part of wider public sector cost-cutting measures.

The Ministry says 303 roles will be gone by July next year, reducing its headcount from about 1000, to about 700.

About 150 fixed term contracts will end at the end of October.

There will also be voluntary and proposed redundancies of permanent employees – including a number of redundancies that will be delayed until the end of June next year.

Forty-five employees have already accepted voluntary redundancy offers, and the ministry is inviting further expressions of interest throughout the consultation period, which begins today and ends on 26 June.
