The man who allegedly murdered Molly Ticehurst while on bail for assaulting her has been moved to the state’s toughest prison.

Police allege Daniel Billings, 28, broke into the Forbes home of his former girlfriend in April and murdered her while on conditional liberty for a raft of serious offences including three counts of sexual intercourse without consent and four counts of stalking or intimidating Ticehurst.

A month after he was picked up for her alleged murder, Billings was moved to Goulburn’s High Risk Management Correctional Centre, better known as Supermax.

In a brief appearance at Parkes Local Court on Thursday morning, Billings wore a green prison-issue jumper and appeared calm on the audio-visual link from the Supermax.

Built to house the state’s most serious offenders, primarily those charged with terror offences, Supermax inmates are subject to strict rules. Unlike in other prisons around the state, inmates are not permitted to work, socialisation in the prison yard is limited to three inmates at a time, and phone calls are surveilled.

The late serial killer Ivan Milat and gang rapist Bilal Skaf are among the inmates who have been housed inside the Supermax.

The matters with which Billings is charged, which includes multiple sexual assaults, animal cruelty in relation to the death of Ticehurst’s dachshund puppy, four counts of stalking and murder, will return to the same local court next month. Billings will be represented by Legal Aid on that occasion.

An AVO that police put in place to protect Ticehurst from her allegedly violent former partner “can remain”, Magistrate Brett Thomas said.
