Multiple police officers hospitalised after man dies during arrest

Must read

Five police officers were hospitalised after a man mysteriously died during an arrest in Victoria’s Macedon Ranges, with police believing he ingested some kind of substance.

Victorian Police will be given powers to conduct random weapons searches in certain targeted areas.

These will be larger areas such as shopping centres and train stations.

This comes amid the growing youth crime crisis in Victoria.

Officers visited a home on Windridge Way in Kyneton about 2.30pm on Tuesday as they were carrying out an investigation.

Shortly after arriving, they arrested a 27-year-old Kyneton man, but following the arrest he came increasingly unwell.

The man quickly became unresponsive, prompting police to call for medical assistance and begin CPR.

Paramedics responded but the man died at the scene.

Five police officers who attended the scene were taken to hospital as a precaution, and early investigative efforts suggest the 27-year-old man may have ingested some sort of substance.

Detectives from the Homicide Squad will investigate the incident with oversight from Professional Standards Command, as is standard when a person dies in police custody.
