‘Mystery’ as Victorian man vanishes on a daily drive he’s done for decades

Must read

A 74-year-old Victorian man failed to return from a drive he has done every single day in a missing persons case police describe as “a mystery”.

Pat left his home on Speed St in Heathcote in a Toyota LandCruiser at 1.30pm on Friday to check on his cattle and properties in Baynton, about 30km away, and never returned.

His family said he made the drive daily and always returned to Heathcote by the same evening.

“He’s done that successfully for a number of decades and on this occasion he didn’t return home,” Pat’s son Justin Connally said on Monday.

“The longer this goes on, the more confusing it is for us and the more concerning it is.”

Pat also has a medical condition for which he needs daily medication, and his family are worried about his welfare.

Victoria Police Sergeant Holly Lembke described the disappearance as a “bit of a mystery” and said there had been an extensive search over the weekend of the 40km of land surrounding Pat’s Baynton property as well as in Heathcote.

Police on dirt bikes have also been searching the area in case his vehicle left the road.

“We’re worried he has driven his vehicle and taken a wrong turn and become disoriented and lost,” Lembke said.

“He doesn’t have a mobile phone which has been difficult too.”

Lembke said Pat had filled up his Toyota on Thursday and “could be anywhere within a tank of fuel”.

At this stage, police do not believe the 74-year-old has been met with foul play.

Pat’s white 1986 Toyota LandCruiser has the registration 1CX-100 and his family said he was not very mobile, so expected him to be with his vehicle.

He is described as 175cm tall with a medium build, short grey hair and bushy eyebrows.

Pat was last seen wearing navy pants, a dark brown crew neck jumper and black shoes.

Anyone who sees Pat or has information on his whereabouts is urged to contact police.
