The In-Season Tournament returns for the 2024-25 NBA season with a new look.
Whereas last year’s edition was simply called the In-Season Tournament, this year’s has been named the Emirates NBA Cup. To complete the facelift, the tournament also has a new logo.
Led by LeBron James and Anthony Davis, the Lakers defeated the Pacers to be crowned champions of the league’s inaugural NBA Cup. While we’ll have to wait until December to see if Los Angeles can defend its crown, we’ll be a step closer to knowing every team’s path to the championship when the groups are revealed on July 12.

NBA Cup schedule
- Start date: Nov. 12, 2024
- End date: TBD
The 2024-25 edition of the NBA Cup begins on Nov. 12, 2024, according to the NBA. It’s not yet known when the semifinals and final will take place.
NBA Cup format
The most recent collective bargaining agreement includes an explanation of the NBA Cup format:
- The NBA Cup is split into two stages: the group stage and knockout stage.
- All 30 teams participate in the group stage, and each team plays a total of four group stage games.
- There will be six total groups in the group stage (three per conference). Each group will have five teams, and those teams will be placed into groups via random drawings.
- The six group stage winners will move on to the knockout stage. The two “wild card” teams (one per conference) that had the highest winning percentages but finished second in the group standings will also advance to the knockout stage.
- Each game of the knockout stage will be an elimination game, meaning the winners will advance to the next round and the losers will be eliminated from the NBA Cup.
- The semifinal games and championship game will be held at a neutral site. Each NBA Cup game other than the championship game will be considered a regular season game.
NBA Cup prize money
Players will earn prize money based on how far their teams advance in the NBA Cup, per the collective bargaining agreement.
- Win championship: $500,000 per player
- Reach final game: $200,000 per player
- Reach semifinal game: $100,000 per player
- Reach quarterfinal game: $50,000 per player
Players will also be eligible to win the NBA Cup MVP award and make the All-Tournament Team.
