NBA Free Agency: Latest rumors on who Lakers will target

While 2024 NBA free agency doesn’t officially open until Sunday afternoon, the news really began heating up on Saturday night. LeBron James opted out of his contract for the 2024-25 season, but also communicated to the Lakers that he would take less than the max to open up the team using the mid-level exception.

That came shortly before reports of Klay Thompson and the Warriors likely going separate ways with the Lakers being one of the teams interested in him.

And suddenly, we’re off to the races.

As a reminder, here are the notable dates for the upcoming days and week.

NBA free agency start date

Sunday, June 30, 3 p.m. PT — Teams can officially begin talking to free agents from other teams at this time. They can agree to a deal, but not officially sign them.

Date NBA teams can officially sign free agents to contracts or offer sheets

Saturday, July 6, 9:01 p.m. PT — This is when NBA teams can put ink to paper. Or finger to iPad, since it’s 2024.

Who are free agents for the Lakers?

With most of the players, including D’Angelo Russell, Cam Reddish, and Jaxson Hayes, picking up their options for next season, the Lakers have only a few free agents.
