New Preview Update Brings 24H2 Features to Windows 11 Versions 22H2/23H2

Must read

It’s Week D, so Microsoft has pushed KB5039302, a new preview update, to those using Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2 that adds a few 24H2 features and brings the build numbers to 22621.3810 and 22631.3810, respectively.

The changes we see here will almost certainly head to stable–or what Microsoft now calls the General Availability channel–on Tuesday, July 9, as part of next month’s mandatory cumulative update.

As noted, KB5039302 includes a few new features that already shipped in Windows 11 version 24H2. These include 7-Zip and TAR file compression options in File Explorer, a Game Pass recommendation card in the Settings home page, a new (Clipboard) Copy option in Share, the new Start menu-based account manager, the return of the Show Desktop button (now that Copilot is an app), and support for Emoji 15.1.

It also includes a few fixes for small issues in the Snipping Tool, the touch keyboard, and USB devices that were failing when safely removed with the Task Manager open.

Note: There’s no Week D preview update for Windows 11 version 24H2, at least not yet. But Windows 10 users are also getting their own Week D update, KB5039299, which brings the build number of that system to 19045.4598. This update includes only fixes, and no new features.
