NFL analyst calls Giants ‘sneaky second-place team’ with one major caveat | Sporting News

Must read

While most believe the New York Giants are destined to repeat their woes from last year, one NFL analyst sees a path to them being a sneaky competitive team.

However, that somewhat bold prediction comes with a pretty major caveat.

In his 100 bold predictions article, Connor Orr of Sports Illustrated called the Giants a “sneaky second-place team” in the NFC East, but only if a major change takes place.

The New York Giants will finish the season with their quarterback of the near future and his name is …

Drew Lock. Many times, I have felt something with utmost certainty (see: last year’s prediction about the Arizona Cardinals stumbling into the No. 1 pick) only to have that prediction not come anywhere close to being true. However, this season seems set up for Lock to take the job from Daniel Jones at some point, should Jones struggle. And, it seems set up for Jones and Brian Daboll to cook up an offense that feeds Malik Nabers and steals a few wins in the process. I think the Giants are a sneaky second-place team in the NFC East, with Lock starting a majority of the games.

Saying the Giants could take second place in the division is bold enough. Saying they will get there with Lock leading the way is even more bold.

While Jones is an average quarterback in the NFL, Lock hasn’t shown that he can carry a team to the playoffs.

He’s a solid backup quarterback to have on the roster in a spot-start situation, but it’s probably going to take another injury to Jones before he gets in as the starter.

And the Giants have made it clear that Jones will be the starter once he fully returns from his ACL recovery.

Who knows? Crazier things have taken place in the NFL, but this certainly counts as a bold take on what could happen.
