Australia’s T20 World Cup campaign has kicked off in unusual circumstances as a nine-man team takes on Namibia at Trinidad’s Queen’s Park Oval.
Selection chief George Bailey and fielding coach Andre Borovec took to the field in unmarked shirts to make up the numbers after Australia captain Mitch Marsh won the toss and elected to field.
Match squads
Australia: Mitch Marsh (c), David Warner, Josh Inglis (wk), Tim David, Matthew Wade, Ashton Agar, Nathan Ellis, Adam Zampa, Josh Hazlewood, Andre Borovec (sub fielder), George Bailey (sub fielder)
Namibia: Nikolaas Davin, Michael Van Lingen, Jean-Pierre Kotze, Gerhard Erasmus (c), Jan Frylinck, JJ Smit, David Wiese, Zane Green (wk), Ruben Trumpelmann, Bernard Scholtz, Malan Kruger
The Aussies are still without six squad members – Pat Cummins, Travis Head, Marcus Stoinis, Mitchell Starc, Glenn Maxwell and Cameron Green – having given them extra time at home following the Indian Premier League.
The 41-year-old Bailey is a former international cricketer, and was one of Australia’s better fielders in his playing days. The 46-year-old Borovec is a former wicketkeeper for Geelong in Victorian Premier Cricket.
This match, and another in two days’ time against West Indies, are proceeding anyway given the bulk of Australia’s squad is in need of match practice.
Namibia have their full complement of players available.
The game is not an official T20I and is not being live streamed.
