‘Nothing’s going to change’: Prickly Bennett waiting for NRL apology after golden point controversy

Must read

Dolphins coach Wayne Bennett has revealed he will be waiting for NRL head of football Graham Annesley to concede referee Adam Gee made the wrong call after a controversial golden point finish on Saturday night.

In the opening stages of the extra period, Jamayne Isaako kicked what looked to be a matchwinning field goal.

However, the on-field referee ruled forward Max Plath had obstructed Raiders players attempting to charge down Isaako’s kick.

Then in the final five minutes of the contest, Jordan Rapana kicked a field goal to seal his side’s victory, but referee Gee was once again forced to make a big call.

Jeremy Marshall-King got his hands to Rapana’s kick, but pleaded with the referee, claiming he was obstructed on his way to the kicker.

However, the Bunker cleared the Canberra players of any wrongdoing and Bennett made his thoughts clear in the post-match press conference regarding the decision.

“Well you have to wait on Monday [when] Graham Annelsey gives his report on the mistakes they made,” he said.

“Nothing is going change. I accept that. But my players deserve answers.

“Two players knocked out tonight, no reports, no penalties. Both were head highs and they both had to go off the field.”

“I can’t answer those questions [on the refereeing].

“They had a look at a couple of thing out there but they didn’t change their mind.

When pressed further on the refereeing decisions, Bennett said: “Nothing’s going to change… nothing I can do now”.

Meanwhile, skipper Jesse Bromwich suffered what initially looked to be a pectoral injury. However, Fox league’s Jake Duke later revealed he’d hurt his ribs.

Even Bennett was confused regarding his key prop’s injury and said the club will wait for scans on the injury blow.

“We’re just not sure whether he’s hurt his chest. We’re not sure how bad it is or what’s going on there,” Bennett said.

‘I don’t know, the doctors aren’t sure. We’ll get scans.”

“That’s footy, that’s what we do.”
