It’s a great event for a great cause and it’s going to continue to be exactly that every summer going forward.
Last week Shepherd’s Maple Creek Golf Club hosted the fourth annual Marilyn Chapman Youth Golf Clinic from Monday through Thursday. This annual golf clinic is open to boys and girls grades three through 12 and focuses on teaching golf fundamentals free of charge to area youth.
Golf clubs, golf balls and tees are provided if need be.
It is sponsored by the Marilyn Chapman Memorial Fund and run by former Shepherd High School golf coaches and players. Initially, some four years ago, about 25 to 30 area-youth attended and that number has consistently grown in recent years with 56 attending last week.
The Marilyn Chapman Memorial Fund is dedicated to offering opportunities for personal growth to local youth through athletic activities all while offering support to mid-Michigan community initiatives. Marilyn Chapman was a proud Shepherd High School graduate (1976) who passed away unexpectedly in the summer of 2019. Chapman had a passion for sports, her friends, her community and in helping others reach their goals in life.
The Marilyn Chapman Memorial Fund has also been a generous supporter of the Shepherd High School Lady Jay golf program. The spirit of the fund in her honor is to promote and support excellence in youth athletics, promote and support the teaching of the correct fundamental skills of golf and other athletics, promote and support the teaching of the values of sportsmanship, self-development, teamwork, and competition in youth athletic programs and support the hard work and dedication that student athletic players show representing their schools and communities.
