One Final Game: Father, son duo share football field

Must read

It’s a game of firsts and lasts for the Vernon Lion’s leader, Kevin Sherrill.

Saturday marks his first appearance as an Oil Bowl head coach, but it is also the final time he will coach his son before he ships out to college in the fall.

The game giving them one more shared moment on the gridiron.

“It’s kind of bittersweet,” said Kevin Sherrill. “It’s probably time. He’s ready for that next phase of his life. At the same time, he looks back on what we’ve been through together. We shared a lot of great memories and a lot of growing up together. I’m going to miss him a whole lot, but I think we make the most of our time.”

“All the memories just pile up in one game,” said Kale Sherrill. “I’m just taking it all in. I’m trying to take all these practices in and stuff, every moment of it, because it’s the last time I’m ever going to strap on a helmet with him yelling at me every play. It’s going to be great.”

This may not be the final performance from Kale. He said he’s considering walking on at Midwestern State, but for now, he’s happy to share one final game with his dad.

Surely, something neither of them will forget for years to come.
