Despite ongoing contract negotiations, Love has participated in voluntary offseason workouts, a decision that’s been praised from high to low in the organization.
Love’s extension last offseason calls for him to be paid $11 million in 2024, only about $40 million or so below the going rate for quality quarterbacks in the current market.
We generally see big QB deals come down in the weeks leading up to training camp, which kicks off around mid-July, so Gutekunst’s timeline is normal.
Thus far this offseason, Jared Goff‘s four-year, $212 million pact is the only big-money quarterback extension that’s come down the pike. Trevor Lawrence, Tua Tagovailoa and Dak Prescott join Love as other signal-callers in line for new deals. The longer clubs wait, the more expensive extensions usually become, particularly for QBs.
The Packers have made it clear they believe in Love — have done so since draft night 2020 — as their future signal-caller. The quarterback showed down the stretch last year that he has the talent to keep the 30-plus years of Pro Bowl quarterback play in Green Bay chugging along. Now, the sides need to settle on a figure that keeps both parties happy for the long term.
