Panthers star Taylan May at risk of being sacked, to fight for career at board meeting

The Penrith Panthers are reportedly moving to terminate the contract of centre Taylan May, who only agreed to a two-year extension with the club three months ago.

The Sydney Morning Herald first reported the news on Monday evening, claiming the Panthers issued May with a show cause notice for a series of breaches of the club’s code of conduct.

The breaches, according to The Herald, are not related to allegations made by May’s partner which resulted in him being charged with a string of domestic violence charges last month.

Instead, the breaches are reported to have taken place before May signed a contract extension with Penrith earlier this year and date back “several years”.

Two breaches, according to the report, include the video May posted to his Instagram account of him in the passenger seat of a car driving up to 96 kilometres per hour in a school zone and the use of foul language on social media.

May will front the Panthers board next Tuesday over the off-field indiscretions, where he will essentially be fighting to stay at the club.

Penrith coach Ivan Cleary was pressed on May’s domestic violence charges last week but did not offer any updates to reporters, simply stating it is a “legal matter”.

Last week, May pleaded not guilty to charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm and two counts of stalking or intimidating another person with the intention of causing them to fear physical or mental harm.

The 22-year-old has been stood down under the NRL’s “no-fault stand down” rules and will not play for the rest of the season given he will next front court in March 2025.

According to the Herald, the Panthers had contacted the NRL over receiving salary cap relief given May will not be available for at least the remainder of the season.
