A woman has been urged to leave her partner of 12 years after he embarrassed her by showing up to her dad’s funeral in basketball shorts – with social media users agreeing she can do better
A grieving woman has shared her outrage after her partner turned up to her dad’s funeral 15 minutes before it ended and wearing basketball shorts. She explained how she has been with her partner for 12 years – and while their relationship has been rocky since 2020, she never thought he could be so disrespectful toward her and her family.
But now, she says she’s “completely done and over him” and “just wants to be left alone”. Taking to Reddit, she said: “We’ve been dating for 12 years. No kids. Not married. All my choice and it’s all fine-ish. We’ve been having problems since Covid in 2020 and things just kept getting swept under the rugs.
“Now in the present day 2024, my dad just passed away. My partner shows up to the funeral 15 minutes before it ends and comes in wearing basketball shorts, looking like Adam Sandler!” Embarrassed and angry, she explained how she’d asked him to wear ‘something nice’ and even offered to take him shopping for a new outfit for the occasion.
She added: “I had to buy a dress because everything in my closet is too inappropriate. And it’s the last time I will ever see my dad so I want to be respectful and dress nice. I just wanted him to wear pants and a well-fitted shirt. It doesn’t have to be full-on suit and tie. He said he ran out of time to get ready so he tried his best to look for clean clothes. I swear he didn’t even bother to shower even though he said he did.”
However, she doesn’t understand why he decided to dress in this way as he claims her dad was “more of a father figure to him than his own dad ever was”. Searching for answers, she asked: “So why couldn’t he put more effort into a respectful outfit? And show up on time? Literally, everyone else stayed from beginning to end. Some family members even showed up before us.

“This is it. I’m completely done and over him. I just want to be left alone now.” While most users urged her to leave him as soon as possible, others slammed him for being so ‘childish’ and ‘disrespectful’. One user said: “All issues of respect for your father aside, this isn’t what supporting your partner of 12 years looks like when she loses her dad. This is a bare minimum level of effort and you deserve better.”
Another user added: “I’m very sorry for your loss. Not only for losing your father. But also for losing the partner, you thought he was for you.” A third user said: “In 2021, my ex decided to throw a tantrum during my dad’s funeral and got in the car mid-funeral and left me there – that was the day I finally left him. Sorry for your loss.”
