Polarising Aussie lolly returns to shelves

Must read

An Allen’s Lollies product that many love and others love to hate is set to make a comeback to retail shelves while a major favourite is also set to return.

Sky News host Paul Murray says some people have started to try and make some money out of Fantales being discontinued.

“Believe it or not, those who are able to buy a packet of Fantales right now, guess what? They are listing them on eBay,” Mr Murray said.

“If you’re somebody who’s willing to pay this price, good luck to you but $85 is apparently what some people are asking for on eBay.”

Spearmint Leaves are making a comeback which has pleased fans of the divisive lolly while also drawing the ire of those who despite it.

Nestlé Oceania head of confectionery marketing Melanie Chen announced the treat was coming back after being taken from shelves in 2015.

“We know mint fans love the sweet chewy tang of Spearmint Leaves, as well as being a favourite decoration among bakers. What’s more, it’s vegan-friendly!” she said.

“Allen’s Spearmint Leaves will be available exclusively at Woolworths and independent supermarkets, so get in quick.”

The Spearmint Leaves are set to be rereleased in stores in August in 170g packets.

Instagram page The Grocery Geek flagged the return of the product earlier in the week to much fanfare.

“They’re BACK!…. Allen’s Spearmint Leaves are returning to shelves over the next few weeks – a real Aussie favourite… a sugar dusted lolly with a refreshing minty flavour – what’s not to love? – Same great taste now Vegan Friendly!” the page posted.

Some commenters expressed their joy they would be able to purchase the lolly again.

“I realise not everyone is keen on spearmint flavour. But these little gems are among my favourite lollies! I put them on par with Allen’s strawberries and cream!” one said.

“Thank goodness,” another commented alongside a drooling emoji.

Others were less pleased with one bluntly commenting “blech” while another posted vomit emojis.

After Allen’s announced its iconic Sherbies brand would be leaving supermarket shelves last year, the manufacturer also issued a major update for the lolly.

While Sherbies could still be found in Allen’s Chew Mix, they were no longer in their own bag as they became an unfortunate casualty of poor sales along with Red Ripperz and Milko chews.

Nestle has announced its iconic Fantales chocolate will be discounted after 93 years, says Sky News host Jenna Clarke.

“The decision is due to ‘declining sales and the need for significant upgrades’ at Nestle’s Melbourne confectionery factory where the chocolates are made,” Ms Clarke said.

Ms Chen, however, has confirmed Sherbies are also returning in full form.

“We also have some extra sweet, sweet news,” she said.

“Allen’s Sherbies are now back in their own bag! The first orange-chew bite with its pocket of sherbet is ready and waiting for chewy lolly lovers.”
