Police swoop in as two arrested at wedding attended by Prince William

Must read

Thousands of well-wishers gathered in the UK for the wedding of the Duke of Westminster, where the Prince William acted as one of the ushers in the high-profile wedding party.

Hugh Grosvenor, the godson of King Charles III, married Olivia Henson at Chester cathedral, but there were dramatic scenes outside the church as two people were arrested.

Two women were removed from the crowd by police after an orange plume of gas was set off from a type of fire extinguisher as the couple, and Prince William, left the cathedral.

The couple were not hit by the gas, and Prince William was seemingly not affected by it.

Campaign group Just Stop Oil said two of its supporters had used the device to project powder paint near the cathedral entrance as the newlyweds made their way to their car following the ceremony.

Cheshire Police said two women, a 69-year-old from Manchester and 73-year-old from Suffolk, had been arrested on suspicion of public order offences and remained in custody.

Grosvenor is a godfather to 10-year-old Prince George, the eldest son of William and his wife Kate.

Kate, who is being treated for cancer, did not attend the wedding. Neither did William’s estranged younger brother Prince Harry, who lives in California with his wife Meghan and their two children.

Grosvenor inherited his title at the age of 25 when his father died in 2016. His ancestor, Sir Thomas Grosvenor, married heiress Mary Davies and acquired what was then marshland in 1677. Over the generations the family developed the land into two of London’s most affluent neighborhoods, Mayfair and Belgravia.

The family’s Grosvenor Estate owns 121 hectares of land in London, as well as land across Britain and housing, office and retail space around the world.

The 2024 Sunday Times Rich List estimated the duke’s wealth at just over 10 billion pounds ($12.8 billion.)
