NBA prospect Devin Carter explains why he’s an asset on and off the court
Providence guard Devin Carter explains why he’ll be such a valuable asset for whichever NBA team drafts him.
Devin Carter, the Providence College guard and reigning Big East Player of the Year, was selected by the Sacramento Kings in the first round of Wednesday’s NBA Draft, held in Brooklyn’s Barclays Center.
Carter was taken with the No. 13 overall pick.

Carter impressed teams at last month’s NBA Draft Combine in Chicago. He set an event record in the three-quarter-court sprint, tied for the lead among prospects in attendance in vertical jump and standing vertical jump and his time in the pro lane agility drill — an exercise that tests defensive mobility and change of direction — ranked in the top three.
Carter averaged 19.7 points and 8.7 rebounds while starting in all of his 33 appearances for Providence last season.
Carter’s 2-point shooting, 3-point shooting, assist rate and defensive rebounding rate all climbed considerably over his last season in Providence. He hit for at least 20 points 15 times, collected 13 double-doubles and recorded at least three blocked shots or three steals in 12 games.
Carter began his college career at South Carolina, where he averaged 9 points per game in his freshman season. He transferred to Providence for his sophomore and junior seasons, staying with the Friars even after the departure of head coach Ed Cooley to Georgetown.
Carter is a Miami native and son of former NBA player Anthony Carter, who played in the league from 1999 to 2012. The elder Carter is currently an assistant coach with the Memphis Grizzlies.
