Rugby Australia dealt huge blow as Wallabies half signs with Titans in bombshell NRL switch

Must read

Wallabies flyhalf Carter Gordon has made the stunning decision to code hop to rugby league with the 23-year-old signing a two-year-deal with the Gold Coast Titans from next season.

Hailing from Queensland, Gordon, who represented Australia in last year’s Rugby World Cup, has played rugby union domestically with the now defunct Melbourne Rebels since 2021.

It’s a tidy pick-up for the Titans, who are desperately short on playmakers.

The Titans announced the shock news in a press release on Wednesday, with Gordon revealing he’s keen for the new challenge.

“I’m excited with the direction that rugby league is taking and the positive feeling around the game,” Gordon said.

“At 23, I feel like I had to take this opportunity now.

“I’m under no illusions and understand that this will be a massive challenge.

“I was really impressed with the Titans and the professionalism they displayed in our meetings.

“I’ve loved my time with rugby as it’s given me the opportunity to represent my country which I’ll always appreciate.”

Titans coach Des Hasler expressed his excitement over the signing.

“What has impressed me is his attitude to test himself and take on the challenge of switching to a new code,” Hasler said.

“He’s a skilful player who backs himself.”

Gordon will follow fellow Wallabies representative Mark Nawaqanitawase to the NRL in 2025.

Nawaqanitawase will link up with the Roosters on a two-year deal.

Gordon has previously admitted that he has no background in rugby league and that he had never really played the sport before.

“I played sports kind of around school but I never really took anything as serious as rugby,” Gordon said last year.

“I’ve never really got into rugby league or AFL or anything like that. I played some touch on the side and some summer sports.”
